چکیده

Methods and materials A multidisciplinary study was conducted in two neighboring rural communities in northern Senegal, where S. mansoni and S. haematobium are co-endemic (n=857). Kato-Katz and urine filtration were used for microscopic detection of the respective Schistosoma species. Households were located using handheld differential global positioning system in the largest community (n=599), and the Kulldorff’s scan statistic was used to detect spatial clusters of infection. Schistosoma-specific cytokine responses (IL-10, IL-5, IFN-g, TNF-a, and IL-2) were assessed in 72h whole blood culture supernatants (n=200), and analyzed by the multivariate technique nonmetric multidimensional scaling (nMDS).

Micro-Geographical Heterogeneity in Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium Infection and Morbidity in a Co-Endemic Community in Northern Senegal

BACKGROUND Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium are co-endemic in many areas in Africa. Yet, little is known about the micro-geographical distribution of these two infections or associated disease within such foci. Such knowledge could give important insights into the drivers of infection and disease and as such better tailor schistosomiasis control and elimination efforts. METHODOLOGY In a...

Bayesian Risk Mapping and Model-Based Estimation of Schistosoma haematobium–Schistosoma mansoni Co-distribution in Côte d′Ivoire

BACKGROUND Schistosoma haematobium and Schistosoma mansoni are blood flukes that cause urogenital and intestinal schistosomiasis, respectively. In Côte d'Ivoire, both species are endemic and control efforts are being scaled up. Accurate knowledge of the geographical distribution, including delineation of high-risk areas, is a central feature for spatial targeting of interventions. Thus far, mod...

Variation in the morphology of the dorsal and dorso-lateral tegument of male Schistosoma haematobium from southern Africa.

The teguments of Schistosoma haematobium males from three localities in the Eastern Transvaal and one in the eastern Caprivi were studied by means of scanning electron microscopy. Eastern Transvaal S. haematobium, which occurs sympatrically with S. mattheei, a bovine schistosome also infecting man and which hybridizes with S. haematobium, exhibited certain S. mattheei characteristics. The occur...

Cytokine Responses to Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma haematobium in Relation to Infection in a Co-endemic Focus in Northern Senegal

BACKGROUND In Africa, many areas are co-endemic for the two major Schistosoma species, S. mansoni and S. haematobium. Epidemiological studies have suggested that host immunological factors may play an important role in co-endemic areas. As yet, little is known about differences in host immune responses and possible immunological interactions between S. mansoni and S. haematobium in humans. The ...

Antioxidant effects of gold nanoparticles on Schistosoma mansoni induced granuloma, in vitro

Objective(s): Schistosomiasis and hepatitis C virus [HCV] co-infection is common among the Egyptian population. Co-infected patients have higher rate of chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential role of gold nanoparticles on granuloma in vitro. Materials and Methods: In the current study, granulocytes were isolated f...
